A few good reasons to go

  • Start with one small pack to share
  • Read the label on the product you actually buy
  • Keep a separate box for the journey home
01

Start small, then choose your favourite

Chikki is one of the foods Maharashtra Tourism associates with Lonavala. We would begin with a small pack rather than choose presents for everyone at the first counter. Share it back at the villa and see what your group actually likes. If a shop offers a sample, ask what is in it before tasting. A little choice made thoughtfully is more useful than a bag of flavours that nobody particularly wanted.

The label matters more than the shorthand

Do not assume every chikki is simply peanuts and jaggery. For example, Maganlal’s own whole-groundnut product page also lists sugar and liquid glucose. Recipes differ, so read the exact pack, especially when choosing for someone else. Ask about ingredients and cross-contact if food allergies matter to your group; if the answer is unclear, leave that purchase out. A shop name or a traditional image on the wrapper is not an ingredient guarantee.

A local name with formal recognition

The Intellectual Property India register lists “Chikki of Lonavala”, application 948, as registered when we checked for this guide. It is an interesting piece of the town’s food story. It does not mean this article certifies every packet or seller. If provenance matters to your purchase, look at the producer and product information rather than treating a familiar shop sign as the whole answer. Keep your receipt when buying gifts.

Buy for the way you will travel

Think about who will carry the bag and when it will be opened. Choose a pack size that suits sharing, check the marked dates and storage instructions, and ask the seller how to protect it during your journey. Keep the label with gifts so the recipient can read it. We would put the box somewhere it will not be crushed by luggage, rather than leave packing decisions until everybody is climbing into the car.

05

Let the food stop finish the outing

A chikki purchase fits neatly after a museum visit, a short town walk or lunch. There is no need to make an extra long detour simply to buy more of the same thing. Keep one pack for the table back at Aashiyana and any gifts separately wrapped. If somebody prefers savoury food or does not want a sweet, let them choose their own small treat; the shared stop need not mean identical shopping bags.
