Start with the hall, not the camera
The main reason to visit Karla is its Buddhist chaitya: a worship hall with a stupa at its far end. Let your eyes settle before trying to take everything in. We would start with the overall shape, then look at one row of pillars rather than photographing every surface. For children, choosing a single animal or carved detail to find can make the visit more absorbing than a long history lesson.
Look for the people behind the stone
Incredible India notes donor inscriptions from people including traders and members of the monastic community. That is a useful way to think about the site: people helped make and maintain it. Read the interpretation available on the day, and let a few details lead your questions. Keep a little space between your group and other visitors so everyone can stop, look and move through comfortably.

Plan this as a hill visit with walking and a stepped approach, rather than an attraction reached directly from the car. Before leaving, check the current route with the venue if anyone has limited mobility or finds stairs tiring. Choose footwear with grip and carry water. Agree on a turnaround point together; there is no need for one person to struggle so the rest can complete a checklist. Leave enough daylight for a comfortable return walk.
Make room for worship and weather
The Ekvira shrine is beside the cave entrance, so the visit also shares space with worshippers. Follow the directions you find on site and ask before photographing rituals. We would favour a comfortably cool, dry spell for the climb. If rain, poor visibility or local restrictions make the approach uncertain, use the official forecast and change the plan. Green hills alone are not a reason to push on.
Choose one substantial stop
For a first family visit, Karla can be the main outing of the day. Adding Bhaja is a choice for people who actively want more cave architecture, not a requirement because both appear on a map. Leave space for lunch and a relaxed return to the villa.
